Nigeria’s Super Eagles have begun their preparations for the crucial World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic, with the first training session held at the Nest of Champions training pitch in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Head coach Finidi George and his assistants guided the team through their paces, working with the 13 players who have arrived so far. Among the early arrivals were Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface and Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika, who joined the camp early Sunday morning.
Early Arrivals Bolster Squad
The training camp officially opened on Friday, with the Super Eagles taking up residence at the Ibom Golf Resort Hotel, a familiar base where they previously stayed during their successful qualification campaign for the 2018 World Cup.
Early birds to the camp included Tanzania-based defender Benjamin Tanimu, Enyimba goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo, and Çaykur Rizespor star Ibrahim Olawoyin. By Saturday morning, the team saw additions such as Rangers left-back Kenneth Igboke and Remo Stars right-wing back Ismail Sadiq. AC Milan’s Samuel Chukwueze, Chippa United’s Stanley Nwabali, and Hatayspor’s Fisayo Dele-Bashiru are also present in the camp.
Key Matches Ahead
Nigeria is set to face South Africa’s Bafana Bafana at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday, June 7. Following this, they will travel to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, for a match against Benin Republic on Monday, June 10. These matches are crucial as the Super Eagles look to secure a top spot in Group C and boost their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Group C Standings
Currently, Nigeria is third in Group C with two points from two matches, trailing group leaders Rwanda by two points and South Africa by one. The winner of the group after ten matches will secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup, making these upcoming fixtures pivotal for Nigeria’s qualification hopes.
Building Momentum
The atmosphere in the camp is positive, with players and coaching staff alike showing determination and focus. Head coach Finidi George is confident in his squad’s ability to perform under pressure and is keen to see his team rise to the occasion in these decisive matches.
