In a major development for Nigerian sports, President Bola Tinubu has approved the complete budget for Team Nigeria’s participation in the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics. This announcement was made by John Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, during a ceremony at the Moshood Abiola Stadium.
Enoh emphasized the significance of this approval, highlighting that it reflects the President’s dedication to elevating Nigeria’s presence on the international sports stage. For the first time, the entire budget estimate for the Olympics has been sanctioned, signaling a strong commitment to supporting Nigerian athletes.
The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN) will oversee the athletes’ preparations and participation. The Olympics are set to take place from July 26 to August 11, with the Paralympics following from August 28 to September 8.
Enoh called on the athletes to honor the President’s support by delivering outstanding performances. He expressed confidence in surpassing Nigeria’s 1996 Atlanta Olympics record, where the nation secured two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.
The Minister also acknowledged the NOC and PCN for their diligent efforts in ensuring high-quality coaching and technical support for the athletes. He announced that preparations for future Olympics would begin immediately after the 2024 Games.
Jean François Hasperie, Chargé d’affaires at the French Embassy in Nigeria, encouraged the athletes to be exceptional representatives of Nigeria. Habu Gumel, President of the NOC, assured that with the substantial preparations and financial backing, Team Nigeria is set to make the country proud.
The event also featured the unveiling of the official sportswear for Team Nigeria, designed specifically for the 2024 Paris Games, symbolizing the nation’s readiness and unity in pursuing Olympic success.
