The Nigerian women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, is heading to the Olympic Games in Paris without their captain, Sarah Ogoke, who has taken a step back for personal reasons. Ogoke’s absence from the 16-strong roster was a surprise, as announced by the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).
In their statement, the NBBF expressed gratitude for Ogoke’s leadership and dedication over the years and assured fans of their commitment to make Nigeria proud despite her absence. Ogoke, 34, clarified that her decision was difficult and made in consultation with the federation. She emphasized that she has not retired from international basketball and plans to return.
Ogoke played a crucial role in leading Nigeria through the Olympic qualifying process and has been instrumental in stabilizing the team through challenging times, including their historic fourth AfroBasket title win. In her absence, veteran player Ezinne Kalu is expected to lead the team.
As D’Tigress prepare to face Australia, France, and Canada, Ogoke has promised to support her teammates virtually and possibly in person, underscoring her ongoing commitment to Nigerian basketball.
