In a significant career move, ex-Super Eagles winger Omatsone Folarin Aluko has been appointed to the coaching staff of English Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town. Aluko, who represented Nigeria after playing for England’s youth teams, has been brought on as a First-Team Coach under manager Kieran McKenna.
Aluko’s international career with Nigeria saw him scoring two goals in seven appearances for the Super Eagles. Despite being pre-selected for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, an injury prevented him from participating in the tournament.
The 35-year-old retired from professional football at the end of the last season. Over his four-year tenure with Ipswich Town, he made 62 appearances, scoring four goals and providing two assists. His transition to coaching marks the beginning of a new chapter in his football career.
Reflecting on his new role, Aluko expressed his excitement: “It is a real privilege to start the next phase of my career by joining the first-team coaching staff here at the Club. Learning from the Manager and all the coaching staff here is a fantastic opportunity for me. It is a great time to be at Ipswich, and I’m really looking forward to helping the squad continue to learn and take on the challenge of the Premier League,” Aluko said via Ipswich Town’s official website.
Manager Kieran McKenna, who has been linked with top coaching roles at Manchester United and Chelsea, welcomed Aluko to the team, emphasizing the value he brings. “We’re delighted to add Sone to our coaching team. His work ethic and values have been important for the Club over the last few years, and we know he will continue to bring those qualities to his new role. Sone has strong relationships with players and staff at the Club and he will be a big addition for us,” McKenna stated.
Aluko’s older sister, Eniola Aluko, is also a notable figure in football, having played for England 102 times before retiring in 2020.
Aluko’s appointment is expected to bring a wealth of experience and insight to Ipswich Town as they prepare for the challenges of the Premier League.
